Alfred Hsing Fights Jennifer Tse in The Recruit

A former graduate of the NATO peace keeping recruit program, special agent Alfred gives top recruit Jennifer Tse one final test.

I had the opportunity to work with Jennifer Tse on a Wang Kar Wai produced film called Europe Raiders (Tony Leung, Kris Wu, Jenn Tse) last year in Shanghai and Italy. It was a fun production and the stunt team spent many months training and prepping for the film. I’ll write a separate article on that entire experience, but one of the take-a-ways was that through the months of training Jenn and I became friends.

So months later, I’m back in LA and I get a message. Jenn says, let’s do a fight scene! and I say let’s do it! and just like that, I write up this short concept and get my good buddy Daniel Cotroneo to help shoot and in one day we shoot the test fight. I had a really good time shooting it, though there were points where I was pulling out my hair over logistics, timing, and wanting everything to be just right. Jenn did an incredible job with doing all her own stunts, wrecking multiple times while doing her grappling takedown on me. There was a point when we did quite a few takes and still weren’t getting it to the level I wanted. I could tell she was in pain from all the hits so I said.. do you want to just move on or do it ’til we get it right? and she basically just said “let’s just f’in do it!” and came right back for another round. That was when I gave her a mental note of respect. haha!
