Alfred Hsing as Fu Sheng in Oscar Contender, Train Dreams



Alfred Hsing plays Fu Sheng (福生), a Chinese laborer who works alongside Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton). The two men share a bond over the mundane life and work that they do as laborers. One day, as they are working alongside one another, a group of racist men accuse Fu Sheng for a crime and without explanation attempt to murder him. When Grainier gets swept up in the moment almost helping these men for a brief instance and is kicked off by Fu Sheng, Grainer asks them “What has he done?” But as Grainier is still gathering information, the men have already dragged Fu Sheng away and thrown him into a river bed. Grainier’s lack of inaction haunts him and carries with him throughout his life.
