Do the Harlem Shake at Youtube Space – SoulPancake Viral Video

July of last year I was called in to YouTube Space! to be part of a cast of memes in this “How to Make Viral Videos” Music Video starring Dave Days featuring a ton of YouTube stars including the infamous Rebecca Black. The song is a parody of the 90’s classic, “All Star” by Smash Mouth. I was excited to find out the video was for Soulpancake’s channel because I really liked the Kid President video and I like a lot of their content in general – feel good content. =)

First of all it was really cool getting to check out the YouTube Space Hangar. It’s a relatively large studio in Santa Monica built to help filmmakers make bigger and better videos. I love the vibe inside. It feels very modern and clean like the google offices in Mountain View, California. They have food trucks that come by to serve the Youtube employees. We got to join in on the grub and I had a lobster sandwich. It was tasty! Then there was a happy hour and we got to check out some google glass.

But enough about the space itself. The video was pretty fun to shoot. I ended up having 2 roles. I was the Harlem Shake guy.

If you don’t know what the Harlem Shake is you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years (or at least not living somewhere with internet access). Last year the Harlem Shake was everywhere. For this music video they put a ton of the most popular viral video concepts in one music video. (You can watch the whole music video at the end of this article.) There were a bunch of scientists at work and then I try to rally them to do the Harlem Shake with me… but instead they all leave and only the janitor is left.. not participating. Yep, they had monkeys and goats there too. It was pretty all out. So all these “memes” are trapped by these scientists who are researching how to make viral videos. They eventually break out and wreak havoc at the lab.

At this point I became a prisoner doing the Thriller dance.
